I know I have not given any updates on my photography class over at Jessica Sprague in a while. The final assignment is next week and I have learned a good amount of information. I have really enjoyed the class on histograms and light metering. These are the areas where I feel I need the most help. Also, I am trying to get better at using my camera on Manual mode where I have to set the white balance, aperture and shutter speed myself. That one is going to take a while. I received some really nice PDF documents from the class that I plan on studying again. Sofia did a little modeling for me outdoors today. I asked my friend/neighbor Rebecca if we could take some photos in her yard since she has many more leaves than we do in our yard. The photos of Sofia on the steps are at our house. I can’t wait until I can bribe Sofia to smile for me. She is more responsive with the photography than she used to be, so I guess I can’t complain. I wish I would have set my aperture higher on these photos a least one more f-stop would have been better (I used 2.8 and will use 3.2 next time). I would have liked for the leaves to have been a little clearer. Oh well, guess that’s how we learn right?
I used my Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens (I LOVE this lens) which creates some nice background blur (bokeh) since it has such a wide aperture. It is a fixed focal length so I have to be the correct distance to get the right shot since this lens does not zoom like my other ones. My ISO setting was 400 since it was an overcast day and my f-stop was f/2.8. I figure if we share these things we can learn more about photography and I would love any tips you use for taking better photos.
Sofia and I had a wonderful time today and Upstate New York is so beautiful in the Fall. It is my favorite season. I want to thank our special friend over at The Pixel Fairy Princess for the adorable clothes she was so kind to send us that her daughter has outgrown. Sofia is wearing one of the tops she sent us in the photos below.

Michele - Lilly is sitting here looking at your blog with me and she says, “What’s her name because I need a shirt like hers and a bow and leaves, can you get me them for Christmas?” She is too funny. Sofia is beautiful! Great pics!

I’ll have to convert it into a tutorial for the blog too. Perhaps you can compare notes and let me know if my tutorial is helpful or not?

Julia - I can’t wait till our leaves look like yours – we are just getting a few leaves turning, but nothing much yet. Sofia looks so pretty in the leaves, she looks to have such a calm demeanor about her. What a lucky mommy you are.
Killlashandra - I love the shot of her sitting in the leaves, what a wonderful feeling of fall you get from it. Glad you’re enjoying the photography class too. I’ve always thought metering would be something to learn more about that I just haven’t figured out yet.
