This is a follow-up to my last post on Sofia’s readoption day. I had a few people inquire as to why we readopted Sofia since she was officially adopted by John and me in China and I thought I would explain why. The main reason we readopted Sofia in NY State is so that we could register an official birth certificate for her. This will make it easier for her throughout her life to prove her identity and birth. Since children from China who are adopted are usually abandoned, there is no birth certificate for them. Also when we receive Sofia’s NY state birth certificate, John and I will be listed on her birth certificate as her parents although it will reflect that she was born in China. John and I thought it was important that our daughter have a birth certificate and since she was obviously born, she deserves to have a birth certificate. Of course we could have probably used her adoption decree for school registration and other things but we wanted Sofia to be protected and have all the rights as any child born here.
Here’s the video from National Adoption Day. The local news covered the event and Sofia’s photo is at the beginning of the story below and she is the 2nd child in the video. She is looking up at Grandpa.

Triplets that were being adopted who also live in our village. We followed right behind them with Sofia’s NY State adoption.

Special handmade blankets and fun gift bags were handed out to all of the children being adopted. It was very nice.

This is one of the most exciting and beautiful ceremonies I’ve seen! It’s actually funny that I wondered onto your site, because today we received our daughter’s birth certificate too! We didn’t have to re-adopt here in NJ, but it was just as exciting to get that document.
Congratulations on NY’s future tax payer and your upcoming 2nd adoption!
Happy Thanksgiving.
